Cough Treatments

There are many easy, yet effective cough treatments for immediate relief from your cough. Whether you prefer at home cough treatments or will be making a run to the pharmacy, the links on this website will provide suggestions and product reviews for quick cough relief.

Cough Treatments

The first thing you may reach for when your cough acts up is the bottle of cough syryp. You may find that this takes the edge off, but you are still coughing regularly; distrupting your daily activities and perhaps worse robbing you of much needed sleep. Try these other treatments that can work wonders on your cough.

Avoid chemical irritants which can be the cause of your cough.  These include household cleaners, new mattresses, new carpeting, cigarette smoke, etc.

In the winter months, keep the humidity levels high in your home with the use of a humidifier or cool-mist vaporizer. The humidity will counteract the dry air which can irritate your throat and worsen a cough. Try to drink at least eight 8-oz glasses of water a day. Water is a natural expectorant which helps thin mucus and loosen your cough. Water is especially helpful if your cough is a result of an illness.

Spicy food is a natural expectorant.  Some options include spicy salsa, horseradish, hot peppers, spicy Chinese food, etc. These spices may also temporarily relieve nasal congestion. As mucus can be a primary cause of cough, avoid food that increases mucus production. These include dairy products, fried food and meat. Try hot tea to moisten the airways and break up mucus.  Add honey for an added benefit.

When you are on the go, cough drops or other hard candies will soothe your throat and curtail a tickle and dry cough.

Steam is an effective cough treatment. The moist air loosens phlegm and congestion in your lungs and throat. The easiest steam method is a vaporizer, but you can also jump in a hot shower (close your bathroom door to keep the steam in the room), or boil water on the stove and carefully position your face over the steam. Try adding a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil for extra soothing.

While sleeping, elevate your head. Use extra pillows and sleep as upright as you feel comfortable. This position will drain your nasal passages and sinuses much more effectively than laying flat.

Signs of Asthma

Asthma is a long-term, chronic inflammatory disorder that blocks air flow in and out of the lungs affecting 23 million Americans; affecting more than one in twenty children. Visit the links on our site for asthma information, support, and the best deals on asthma-related products.

Cough Allergies

Allergies can cause many symptoms including runny nose, sneezing, itchy eyes, and cough. Cough is necessary during an allergic reaction because it is the body’s way of protecting itself by expelling irritants. Let’s say you are cleaning a very dusty room, you may find yourself continuously coughing during the chore. The same is true for other types of allergies, especially those associated with air-born irritants such as pollen, dander, and mold.
